Aleria

Restaurant, modern Greek · Megalou Alexandrou 57, Metaxourgeio

A restored neoclassical in Metaxourgeio with one of the best courtyards in Athens. No Michelin star, and it does not need one to be worth the drive.

The courtyard at Aleria: a stone-flagged floor, climbing plants over the walls, and a marble-topped table.

Commercial relationship

None. LivingTheta has no commercial relationship with Aleria and receives nothing from it.

Aleria has occupied a restored neoclassical building in Metaxourgeio since 2006. The courtyard — stone-flagged, walled, planted, with the old house rising around it — is the reason most people come, and Gikas Xenakis has led the kitchen for around a decade.

No star, and that is not a caveat

Aleria does not appear on the standing Athens Michelin list. Everything else on this page except one room does, so we are stating it plainly rather than letting proximity do the work.

What it has instead is duration. Holding a serious reputation for two decades in the same building, in a neighbourhood that has changed around it twice, is a form of evidence that no single inspection produces.

What a household on the coast gets out of it

A courtyard. That is the honest answer. The Riviera has an unlimited supply of sea and almost no walled gardens, and this is one of the best of them — the same reason Soil in Pangrati is on this list.

We have not eaten here, and this file does not tell you whether the cooking matches the setting.

We do not run a booking service. We do know which rooms are worth a Tuesday, who is cooking rather than plating, and which kitchens will send someone to your house. Ask and we will tell you what we would do.
