Loro Piana chose Astir Marina for its first boutique in Greece, and built something rather than fitting out a unit. The facade is a curved carabottino — the slatted timber grating used on boat decks — and the interior carries hand-finished linen and a set of wicker Arca towers by the Argentinian artist and designer Cristian Mohaded.

What the house is

Loro Piana sells fibre. The company built its name on sourcing — vicuna, baby cashmere, the finest merino — and sold cloth to other houses long before it sold finished garments under its own label. The clothes carry no visible logo and the price is in the material.

That makes it the least legible luxury brand on the promenade and, for a certain buyer, the only interesting one. The piece on what happens when the logo fades is about exactly this shift.

The pillar file explains why a house of this kind opens on a headland rather than in Kolonaki.

An introduction is worth more than a list

In this category the name of a shop is close to useless. The name of a person inside it is not. Tell us what you are actually trying to buy and we will point you at the door and, where we can, at the person behind it.

  • 01 A human reads it. Always.
  • 02 We name names, and we say why.
  • 03 Any commercial relationship is disclosed up front.
  • 04 Nothing you send us is sold to anyone.

Where we earn a referral fee we say so on the page it appears. Nothing in the editorial rankings is for sale. Read the charter.
